Three quarters of the UK public are unable to hold a conversation in a foreign language, according to the British Council.
The organisation, which promotes international cultural relations, identified 10 foreign languages that will be most vital to the UK over the next 20 years based on economic, geopolitical, cultural and educational factors. Top of the list was Spanish, closely followed by Arabic and French. And it's easy to see why Spanish is the second most widely-spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese with approximately 400 million native speakers.
